Christ – Bits & Pieces of Advent

Advent 2019 . Bits & Pieces . Deep Thoughts

“That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them.

They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. ‘Don’t be afraid!’ he said. ‘I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.’

Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.’ ” – Luke 2:8-14 NLT

The words in Luke 2 are etched in many children’s (and adults) mind because of the iconic scene in A Charlie Brown’s Christmas, when Linus tells the the Christmas story to a downtrodden Charlie Brown.

Charlie Brown, like many of us, was struggling to find meaning amidst the hustle and bustle of the season.

Linus, in his role as shepherd, helped lead his friend to the truth – the reason for the season.

There’s been a lot of hypothesis about Linus’ actions during the speech. As Linus gets to the point where the angels say “Fear Not” he drops his ever present security blanket and effortlessly gives the good news of Christ’s birth.

It’s as if the knowledge of God’s presence is enough to assure Linus he is safe and can let go of his fears.

One of my favorite duets this time of year is Emmanuel, God With Us. I especially love the medley provided by Anthem Lights with Amy Grant.

It’s a song that reminds us God, born on Christmas morn, is always with us; a voice of peace to all who are weary – no matter who we are.

Emmanuel, God with us. May the presence of Christ find you in the midst of the wrapping paper and gifts. May you find peace – free of fear – in this season of life.

Faith Actions

1) Read Luke 2 and reflect on the story of Christ’s birth.

2) Listen to Amy Grant/Anthem Light’s Emmanuel God With Us here: http://bit.ly/AdventChrist_AmyGrant. Take time to reflect on the words within the song.

3) Watch Linus give his speech during this excerpt from A Charlie Brown’s Christmas (http://bit.ly/AdventChrist_Linus). Better yet, take time to watch the full movie with your kidlets (or your favorite movie partner). How does God speak to you through the scene/movie?
